I have been wanting to lose some weight for a while. I usually start the week full of good intentions but, as it happens,  the week rarely goes according to plan and on average the diet goes out the window by Thursday. Now, I have never nor I will ever be a person enslaved to diets or food plans. Life is too short for that. But I would like to shed some weight so…

I decided that the best way for me to stick to some sort of plan is to set myself a public challenge so there is so backing down. Name and shame, people, it’s the only way forward for me…

My goal is to lose 4 kg in a month (or 8.81 pounds). I believe that 1 kg a week is an achievable target and it can be managed with healthy diet and without starvation, which is very important in family life and to guarantee the survival of the rest of the family, if you know what I mean… As smoothies are easy to make, quick, versatile and delicious,(see previous recipes here, here and here) I decided I would go with green smoothies for this challenge.

So the plan is: substitute my daily lunch for super healthy, protein filled and delicious smoothie that will fill me with plenty of nutrients and enough energy to keep me going until dinner where I will be able to enjoy it with my family. Kale and pineapple smoothie @ OrganisingChaosBlog

I am thinking that Monday to Friday will be easy enough to follow the plan and drink the smoothies at lunchtime. However, I’d imagine the weekend will be harder. I will be enlisting Mr B and friends to support me and to help me stay strong through the challenge.

If you want to join me, I will be posting one smoothie recipe a week and I will keep you updated during the week by twitter and Facebook with a more in-depth report (I know you like those ones) every Monday this month. I will not, however, be posting my before and after weight. Nope. Too embarrassed.

My personal challenge - Week 1 @ OrganisingChaosBlog


2 cups of chopped kale leaves, stems removed
1 cup of unsweetened almond milk (or any other milk you prefer)
1 banana (frozen if you want)
1/2 cup low-fat Greek yogurt
2 slices of pineapple
1 teaspoon peanut butter
1/2 teaspoon chia seeds
1 to 2 scoops of vanilla protein powder (not in the photo)

It is delicious. 2 pieces of fruit, 1 serving of vegetables, omega 3, calcium and good source of vitamin B6, fiber, calcium,potassium and vitamin E. And, I know you are wondering, the taste of kale is not at all dominant in it, but it works so well with the rest of the ingredients.

It looks like the good weather has finally arrived to Ireland! I am nervous about getting excited about the heat as we don’t know if it is here to stay but we are totally embracing the summer with open arms.

Organising Chaos - Easy Flavoured Water

With the heat comes more thirst. Although I am happy to use carbonated drinks as mixers in my cocktails, I have never been able to drinks them on their own, I just never enjoyed the fizz sensation in my mouth.  I have always been a water person. It is actually the only thing that will get rid of thirst for me. But water can get a bit boring and to drink the infamous 2.5 lts of water a day can be a challenge, so I decided to  gather all the empty bottles at home to infuse some water with different flavors for different moods or times of the day in order to encourage me to drink more water.

Frozen berries are ideal for this. This is one the quickest infusions to do as the second you add the water to the raspberries you will see the color changing and the sweetness infusing the water (you won’t see that though). The kids have even requested it for their school lunches!

Lemon water is so fresh and probably the best way of crunching your thirst in those hot days or after exercise. It is also great for detoxing and generally good for the system. It is energizing and great to drink during the morning.

If you don’t have a mint plant, I will strongly advise you to get one. There is minimum maintenance and it is a plant that keeps on giving. We use mint  a lot for tea, cocktails, food… and it will bring your plain water to a different dimension. I combined it with some frozen blueberries to get the mixture of sweetness and freshness, ideal to have between meals.

Orange and cloves are a great combination with hot or cold water. The orange peel gives the water a subtle citrus flavor without been too strong while the cloves gives it a hint of spice that will make your feel comfy and warm in those summer evenings.

So go on, there is no reason not to drink water any more. Give it a go!

This is one of my favorite cocktails ever. It may be because it reminds me of my family back in Spain. We all like rum and Cuba Libres are something we used to drink together watching soccer matches and at family get-togethers.

Some people prefer the finer taste of white rum and others prefer the sweeter taste of dark rum. For me, it depends on what mood I am in. Dark rum gives the cocktail an extra depth and warmth that is nice when I want just one drink at the end of the day. If I am having few drinks after a meal with some friends, I prefer white rum. There is no right or wrong, whatever it takes your fancy.

The name of this drink comes from its ingredients: Rum from Cuba and Coke from the freedom (Libre) in the US. Wherever it comes from, it is very delicious.

50 ml of rum
125 ml of Coke
10 ml of lime juice

Mix all the ingredients in a tall glass with ice and garnish with a lime wedge.

In my head, smoothies represent everything that is healthy in the world.

If the boys are going to a birthday party where I know they are going to eat junk food (sausages, chips, pizza, sweets, cakes… the usual), I always give them a big smoothie with as much fruit, organic yoghurt and honey beforehand to make sure that they have something nutritious and full of vitamins to balance the meals out. It is the same for us. If I am planning a night out or to get a take-out, I would make myself a smoothie before for a guilt free enjoyment later on.

This healthy CHOCO RASPBERRY SMOOTHIE feels a bit naughty because it has chocolate. It is of course dark chocolate (70% coco). Dark chocolate is full of antioxidants, it is very nutritious and it may improve brain function. It is also he healthiest and most delicious chocolate in the entire world.
– 1 cup Almond Milk
– 1/4 cup Dark Chocolate
– 1/2 cup Fresh Raspberries
– 1/2 cup fresh Strawberries
– 1 tbspn Honey

Today was such a beautiful day. It was very cold but sunny, it’s Friday, I have a lovely weekend planned ahead of me and I am looking forward to dinner date with my man tonight. A perfect day!

Today is also the last Friday of January.  We have been very (mainly) good this month in an effort to balance out the excess of the holidays, but as it is nearly Friday and I have date, I am having a cocktail.

2 measures of white rum
1 1/2 measures lime juice
1 tbsp grenadine
1 tsp sugar syrup

Put all the ingredients into the cocktail shaker with the ice and shake well until it is well frosted. Strain into a cocktail glass and dress with a cocktail stick and a jelly (optional).
I am loving the sweet and sour mixture of the lime and grenadine. So good!

I usually start the year full of promises of a healthier life style for myself: eat more fruit, exercise more, enjoy the great outdoors more often…  I am usually very good the first month but as we settle back into the daily routine of school, extra curriculum activities, meeting friends and so on, these promises start fading and I revert to my normal (ie. previous) lifestyle.

I find that the only way to make a real change into my lifestyle is by making it a habit, making time in my daily routine to add whatever I want to incorporate into my day and keep doing it consistently for a month. After a month, it no longer feels like an additional task, but it is already part of my routine.

I have been taking warm lemon water every morning for a while now. At first, I really had to remember to do it as my first impulse was to go for the coffee, but it is now part of my daily routine and I feel great. In addition to this, I wanted to introduce a smoothie into my schedule. Smoothies feel like a treat to me because they tend to be sweet and tasty so it should be easy enough to do it. Ingredients for Kale and berry smoothie
This Kale and Berry Smoothie is super tasty and healthy, and we often have the ingredients in the house. Kale is the new super food and it provides excellent sources of antioxidant vitamins A, C and K. Berries are also a great source of vitamin C which supports your immunity.

* 1 Cup of frozen berries
* 1 Handful of kale
* Juice of 1 orange
* 100 ml of probiotic milk.

Although I always thought that a smoothie were a morning drink but  I think they are ideal for the afternoon, that time between lunch and dinner when your energy levels are dropping and you are a bit hungry. It would be a perfect “pick me up” super healthy drink.

Hi lovely people! I hope you had a lovely holiday with your friends and family. I have had some amazing few days with loved ones, eating, drinking and laughing too much, which is the way it is meant to be, as far as I am concerned.

As today is the last day of the year, I am planning my dinner menu for tonight to spend the night with my friends. I am usually much better prepared by this stage, but this year I have been too busy and at this stage, I don’t even know how many people are coming for dinner. It doesn’t matter. As my mum always said, we’ll eat more or we’ll eat less, but we’ll eat together. The main thing is about being together, sharing stories and memories, discussing random topics, fixing the world.

I am trying to decide on one cocktail to have for the night. I like the idea of making something in advance, something to enjoy without any fuss. I am looking for something special, a bit decadent, it is New Year’s Eve after all.
