MAKE YOUR OWN SERVING BOARD

Make your own Serving Board for a night with friends @ OrganisingChaosBlogWhen we updated our kitchen, we went for solid wood counters. We wanted a very white and neutral look for the kitchen and we knew that the wood would make it feel more welcoming and warm and it totally does. We are totally and utterly in love with our counter tops. Updating the kitchen @ OrganisingchaosBlog

As kitchen counters come on pre-cut lengths, we had to get 2 full lengths for the long stretch along the window leaving us with plenty of wood left to do what we wanted with it.  A big chunk of it was used to make a windowsill behind the sink and that left us with some off cuts of wood that would be no good for any other big project so we put the big pieces of wood left in the attic while we come up with projects for it and we left the small bits in the utility room.

After staring at them every time I did laundry or just passed by the utility room, I made a decision. I decided to make a couple of food boards out of them. It made perfect sense: I love food, my friends love food and  I am always looking for ways to display the food in ways that looks pretty and it’s practical, and this would be yet another way to do it. Make your own Serving Board for a night with friends @ OrganisingChaosBlog
Make your own Serving Board for a night with friends @ OrganisingChaosBlogSo once I united the boards, chalk paint and brushes I got on with it. Two hours later, a couple of magazines read, plenty of coffee drank and the paint dried, I gave the newly painted boards a rub with linseed oil to protect them and stuck some felt pads at the bottom to protect my counters from being accidentally scratched. Ready for using!

We have been using them a lot whenever we have had friends over. It makes everything look so pretty and yummy!Make your own Serving Board for a night with friends @ OrganisingChaosBlog

I have also being using them as a little personal tea station for one.

What do you think? Have you got any wood lying around your house? or are you coming to ours?

WEEKLY INSPIRATION : VALENTINE’S DAY

We are already in February and Valentine’s Day is just around the corner! Are you a Valentine kind of person?

Mr B and I never celebrated it until we had the boys and they became aware of the day. We are just not very romantic. Now  we have a “family date”, exchange cards and have breakfast in bed, all together. It’s lovely. The boys call it Love Day, and for us, that is exactly what it is.

Whichever way you celebrate, on your own, with your partner, in family, with friends… t is always nice to have some inspiration for the day.

3 NEW USES FOR A PAINTBRUSH THAT WILL MAKE YOUR LIFE EASIER (AND HOW TO MAKE THEM PRETTY)

It’s funny to see how different things are in every family. What is normal in one household might be something totally alien to another. You really get to appreciate all these differences when you start living with people, be friends, partners… everyone brings something different and new to the mix.

Where am I going with this? In my parent’s house in Spain, there has always been (or at least as far as I can remember) a painting brush in the kitchen. This “bug standard” painting brush was not for painting… oh no! it was to clean out the breadcrumbs left after cutting the bread. So, we would have the bread board, the bread knife and the bread brush. Perfectly normal. Or so I thought. Mr B always found it amusing. Useful, but amusing.
Paint brushes are not just from painting - OrganisingChaosBlog
This got me thinking about what other uses I have around the house for painting brushes that were not, well, painting that are totally normal to me but other people may not know?

1. GETTING RID OF BREADCRUMBS

Brushing the breadcrumbs will make it easier to clean them as they will remain dry, not scatter around the place and won’t get stuck to the cloth making it all yucky. Also, you’ll be able to get the breadcrumbs that tend to hide in the corner…. the little feckers that make you stick your tong out when you are cleaning… those ones! They will be brushed away with your dignity intact!Paint brushes are not just from painting - OrganisingChaosBlog

2. CLEANING KEYBOARDS

For those moments after haven shaken your keyboard upside down and you realize how filthy it is, clean between the keys with the paintbrush to get out the hard to get dirt bits of stuff (or whatever they are!).  Easy! Paint brushes are not just from painting - OrganisingChaosBlog

3. CLEAN THE VENTS IN YOUR CAR

By using a brush to clean the vents, you not only will you dust them but also you will push out any bit of dirt that might have got into them.Paint brushes are not just from painting - OrganisingChaosBlog

How cool is that? and how simple?
But I hear you (or maybe it’s just me!): Do I really want a manky old brush around my house in plain sight? Of course not!!! And that is why someone invented washi tape – to make everything prettier. By covering the silver part of the brush with washi tape and adding a pretty ribbon at the end, you have transformed a plain boring painting brush into something useful and pretty that you don’t mind displaying in your kitchen or your office.
Paint brushes are not just from painting - OrganisingChaosBlog
So next time you are in a hardware store, get some brushes for home, give them some love and they will love you right back. As simple as that.

What do you think? Would you give it a go?

MAKE YOUR OWN ADVENT CALENDAR

Today is the 1st day of December. The 1st of December!!! Which means that there are 18 more sleeps until Star Wars: The Force Awakens!! I can’t wait!!!!
Oh yeah, and 24 sleeps to Christmas!
Make your own Advent CalendarThis year I wanted to make an Advent Calendar to help with the countdown to Christmas at home, to build it up more and, to be honest, to blackmail the kids into being on their best behavior for the month. Oh yeah, mother of the year and all that… that’s me…
Make your own Advent CalendarI wanted to make something simple but pretty. I decided to use 4 different patterns with just a couple of materials. Nothing complicated.
Advent Calendar - making the felt patternsI made Christmas stockings and mittens from felt and I made parcels with toilet rolls and wrapping paper.
Advent Calendar - making the parcelsOnce I had all the parcels together, I added the numbers with washi tape and I hot-glued them to some red ribbon.
Make your own Advent Calendar -Make your own Advent CalendarIt will definitely help with the build-up to Christmas.
24 sleeps. 24 treats. All waiting for them right there, on the wall.

Are you ready for it?

NO TRICK, JUST A TREAT: FREE HALLOWEEN PRINTABLES

Organising Chaos - Free Halloween PrintablesThis week we are enjoying our first mid-term break and some quality time with the Scottish cousins that are over for the break. As the boys don’t have any cousins in the country (they have them in Australia, Spain and Scotland), whenever we are together, we always make a huge effort to hang out as much as possible which involves plenty of sleepovers, big messes, constant cooking and loads of tea and coffee.

We are also planning a Halloween party for Saturday. This party is also an excuse to celebrate all the kid’s birthdays as we haven’t managed to be together for any of them. The kids are very excited. We are trying to make decorations to have the house ready and that is where the marvelous artists that offer their prints for free in the world-wide web come to the rescue once again and not for the last time.

These free printables will make your house look amazingly spooky and stylish for your Halloween party.

PLAIN RUG + FELT BALLS = HAPPY RUG

PLAIN RUG + FELT BALLS = HAPPY RUG

OrganisingChaosBlog - Making a rug special with felt balls
When it comes to interior design, I have always been a fan of the Scandinavian style. I love the whites, the greys, the soft colors, the textures… Scandinavian interior design is renowned for its simplicity, utility and beauty, and that is exactly what I want in my home – simple clean lines that allow a space to work for a busy family with young kids but it is still beautiful.
One of the main features of the Scandinavian style is the light colors. I guess it is to maximize any bit of light that they get in the winter months and, having lived in Ireland for 15 years and experiencing the dark (and wet, and cold) winters, I need plenty of light colors around the house to help me make it to Spring.
OrganisingChaosBlog - White rug + felt balls = happy rug
Last year I bought a plain inexpensive white rug for the sitting room. It was a bit of a characterless rug but I bought it with the idea of maybe painting some design in it or dying it. A year passed by and the white rug was still under the sitting room table. Still white. Still plain.
OrganisingChaosBlog - Making a rug special with felt balls
As much as I love white, I also like colors. A touch of color always lifts a space, adds a touch of fun and it makes any space more summery even in the depths of winter. If that touch of color comes in the shape of colorful gorgeous felt balls, well, that just divine!!! So what do you do when you have a white rug and a load of colourful felt balls? The only thing you can do!
OrganisingChaosBlog - White rug + felt balls = happy rug

I love the subtle color that the balls bring to the room and I love how the rug makes the wood on the floor and on the table that bit brighter.

UPDATING FRUIT BOXES

When we were planning our 20 year anniversary, Mr B and I realized that at least 1/3 of our guests would be children. Most of our friends and family are at the similar stage in life as us, with kids, and we wanted to make sure that the party was very inclusive and that both parents and kids would have a great time.
Kid's area at the party
I decided to set up an area for the kids. I organised some entertainment for them and I set up a little table for them to help themselves and to have fun. As the table was very small, I needed more surface in which to put food and drinks as well as carry them from the house to the field where the party was held.
Updating a fruit box to use as a tray
I decided to use some fruit boxes that my local fruit shop kindly donated. I love the wood mixed with the different designs and colors in the fruit boxes but I also wanted to personalize them and also to make them fit into my design scheme.

I used some paint to color the sides of the boxes in some of them as some of the designs weren’t to my taste.  I used washi tape to decorate the sides of the box.

I covered the bottom of the box with some pretty paper matching the washi tape. It looks pretty, don’t you think?

They were extremely useful on the day to carry food and beverages around and to display food. It also helped us in the tidying up the following day. I am currently using them in my room (I have glued some felt at the bottom of the box to avoid scratching the shelves).

I love the idea of extending the life of something that has already done a great job. It now looks prettier and it will last for another good few years. Up-cycling at its best!

TOOTH POUCH

Older Monkey has lost a good few teeth already. Every time there was a wobbly tooth there used to be a little panic that the tooth will fall out in the yard, in school, while playing in the garden and that it wouldn’t be found. The real fear was of course that he would have nothing to give to the Tooth Fairy and that he wouldn’t get his coin.
Organising Chaos - Tooth Pouch
I decided to make a little tooth pouch that would fit in his pocket so we could carry it with him at all times. It can later be put under the pillow so the Tooth Fairy knows where to collect the tooth from.

All you need to make these tooth pouches is some white felt and some different coloured felt, wool, white thread and some stick-on velcro. You can download a tooth silhouette from internet or try your hand at drawing it on your own, and cut it out of the white felt. Cut some colorful felt stripes 15 cm long by 5 cm wide. You will be folding the felt about 6.5 cms from the top so center the tooth profile on the top part of the strip and stitch it using the white thread.

Fold the strip 6.5 cm from the top and using the white wool, sew around to close the pouch. Use a tiny bit of stick-on velcro to close the pouch and it is now ready to use.
Organising Chaos - Tooth Pouch
I personalized the ones for my kids by adding their initials to them. They are delighted with them and they bring them everywhere now. Chaotic Monkey keeps checking his teeth in the hope that one of them will be loose. One of them will be soon, and the tooth will be safe.,

Have an amazing weekend,
