It’s funny how different traditions are family to family. Especially when it comes to decorating your house for Christmas.
The last month has been a bit crazy busy
In the middle of December, I moved every bed in the house and about 85% of the rest of furniture. It was intense. I am nearly finished tidying up all the rooms but it has taken the best of a month and a lot of back pain. The chaos, the constant mess, the darkness and the bad weather was not a great combination for my head but I knew that I wouldn’t get done before the Christmas holidays and that I wouldn’t be able to do anything from Spain, so I made a decision to do little bits every day without getting bug down on finishing the rooms. That was a great step towards keeping my sanity.
This decision also helped me focus on the little things.1. I managed to make some presents for the teachers in the boy’s school 2. We had a lovely morning going to visit Santa and hanging out with Rudolph 3. The boys got dressed up to go to see Star Wars: the Force Awakens, the first time 4. Big Monkey made a Christmas card that sums up our Christmas 2015 – equal amounts of excitement for Star Wars and Santa – perfect!
Hanging out with family in Spain was soooooo lovely!!! 1. Travelling to Spain had many hiccups and took much longer than we planned but the boys were so good and patient. Real heroes. 2&3 . Christmas Day was fabulous. It was sunny, it was warm, there was 40 of us. Loads of chats, loads of hugs, loads of food. So good for the soul. 4. Chaotic Monkey and I went to a soccer match with my sister. He loved it.
And this is my new BFF, one of my presents this Christmas. It makes everything better….
Have a fab day
Christmas time is THE time for giving and receiving presents, and it’s lovely, most of the time.
I love buying presents for family and friends. I love thinking about what they might like, what they have, what they need, what they would use…. it’s just lovely putting time and effort into buying those presents.
There are other presents that are hard to buy, like the office Secret Santa where you have got someone you don’t really know all that well, a very limited budget and not a whole lot of inspiration. You are looking for presents that are both nice and impersonal, lovely but not offensive. I don’t like the idea of just buying something, wasting money in something that you know will end up in a drawer – it’s such a waste of money! I just can’t.
I have made up a list with ideas of things to buy that are thoughtful, in budget and will not end up in a dark corner.
For the guy who likes to work out at home – Hand weights
For the guy who is always taking photos in his phone – 3 in 1 Lens Set
For the guy who has not grown up yet fully – a Rubber Band Gun
For the guy into Superheroes and coffee – a Batman mug
For the football aficionado – a Football Beanie
For the gambler in your office – a poker set
For the guy who knows how to look after himself – beauty products
For the foodie in your office – a cooking book
I hope that this list will provide you with some inspiration to go out and buy a nice gift for all the men in your life, including the newbie in the office, and thus freeing some time to enjoy the Christmas chaos and shenanigans with loved ones.
Star Wars VII : The Force Awakens opens in Irish cinemas on Friday the 18th of December. We are so excited! We have been waiting for the film for, like, ever!!! no exaggeration!!
We have tickets booked for Saturday the 19th to go with the boys and I can’t tell you who is more excited, the boys or me! Well I can. It’s clearly me. I win the exciting competition. Me! Me! Me!
So yes, we are Star Wars nerds in my house and if, like me, you are looking for Star Wars presents that can complement any house decor and not look tacky, I have made up a little list here for you that I hope will help you:
A Darth Vader Projection Alarm Clock would always be useful. We all have to get up, right?
For those nerd cooks in your life, this R2-Q5 Measuring Cup
If you like books, these AT-AT book ends are for you!
If you know someone who likes both chess and Star Wars (it may happen), someone came up with the best combination ever!!! The Classic 3D Chess Set
This R2-D2 Mint Cady is so cute and it will keep your mints fresh, which is no small task!
A Storm Trooper mug is always appreciated, isn’t it?
And slippers!! Always welcomed they are…. 😉
Now, this Chewbacca jacket is not only practical but very stylish. Am I right or am I right?
And of course there is also something out there for the arty ones too. These R2D2 crayons are just adorable!
Or just some cool Star Wars wall art. I have to say, I ADORE this.
So as you can see, you can give thoughtful and stylish presents all at once.
Ok, fine. At least thoughtful ones…
I love looking around the web for handmade Christmas decorations.
Handmade decorations always make a house truly feel like a home and they add so much character to any space, plus the satisfaction of knowing that you have made something yourself.
As you know, I love creating messes and making things. I like getting the kids involved. They get so excited! Chaotic Monkey starts with loads of energy and gets distracted about 5 minutes into it and runs off covered in material and glue. Big Monkey usually lasts 10 more minutes before he has the urge to draw something, so I tend to finish it on my own. I don’t mind. I find it therapeutic, except the cleaning. I don’t like the cleaning part…
MollyMooCrafts has an abundance of amazing craft projects to make with the kids but I find this tree garland particularly adorable, don’t you think?
I find the colors in these decorations by Picklebums very uplifting and they would bring an extra personal touch to any tree.
The amazing Martha Steward has the most beautiful place setting ever, but we wouldn’t expect anything else from her now, would we?
Pompoms. Who doesn’t love pompoms? They are so whimsical! And Northstory has a such fun way to make them look delightful for Christmas.
This wreath by That is My Letter would not only make you stand out from your neighbors but it would help you clear out all those fabric bits and pieces that you have in that basket somewhere in your house and you will then be able to buy more!!! or not… 😉
These beautiful trees by Beautiful Matters, are easy to make, beautiful and so versatile… a little forest in your house!
I love, love, love this simple and yet stunning center piece by InspireMeHeather. Did I mention that I love it?
If you are lucky enough to have pine cones in your area, you can make the cutest tree out of them. Yes, you heard me right. Just ask Tapelu2. So cute!!!
So, between all these amazing examples of beautiful and yet easy hand-made Christmas decorations, plus last year’s ones, plus the ones I’ve made on the blog(here, here, here), you have no excuse not to personalize your home-decor during this festive season with your very own hand-made Christmas decorations
Share your projects on #ChaoticChristmas so we can all see them and appreciate them.
Today is the 1st day of December. The 1st of December!!! Which means that there are 18 more sleeps until Star Wars: The Force Awakens!! I can’t wait!!!!
Oh yeah, and 24 sleeps to Christmas!
This year I wanted to make an Advent Calendar to help with the countdown to Christmas at home, to build it up more and, to be honest, to blackmail the kids into being on their best behavior for the month. Oh yeah, mother of the year and all that… that’s me…
I wanted to make something simple but pretty. I decided to use 4 different patterns with just a couple of materials. Nothing complicated.
I made Christmas stockings and mittens from felt and I made parcels with toilet rolls and wrapping paper.
Once I had all the parcels together, I added the numbers with washi tape and I hot-glued them to some red ribbon.
It will definitely help with the build-up to Christmas.
24 sleeps. 24 treats. All waiting for them right there, on the wall.
This month is going to fly.
Are you ready for it?
My house has gone a bit crazy with Christmas decorations and lights. I have obviously failed in my job to tone things down (remember?). Since Mr B is on holidays, a decoration has gone up every 30 minutes in my house. I have to say that the house looks so lovely and cosy that I decided to join in (and end the madness!).
