Happy Monday!!!  I can’t believe that I am reaching the end of my personal challenge : Losing Weight with Smoothies!
Week 4 Losing weight with smoothies - Melon and mint @ OrganisingChaosBlogAt this point looking back, I am delighted that I have made it this far (I can sometimes be a bit flaky) and that it is nearly finished, but I am also delighted with the results so far.

This week I have lost just under 1 kg. Still good but not as great as before. Happy enough with it though. We all know that it is easier to loose weight at the beginning of a diet and then it gets harder shedding those last pounds. I guess that your body just gets used to the new regime… And, in the spirit of full disclosure, I was away for the weekend and I did go near the smoothie make once!  I will not bit myself about it. As I mentioned on my first week, I can never be a slave to a diet. I guess it is all about balance.

This week green smoothie is a lighter shade of green than even last week’s one! It is very refreshing and it has hints of summer in it…

WEEK 4 : HONEYDEW AND MINT SMOOTHIE

1 banana
1/2 honeydew melon, cut into chunks (about 4 cups, or 1 1/2 lbs)
1/2 cucumber
1 cup light coconut milk
5-6 leaves fresh mint
1 scoop of vanilla protein powder
Drizzle of honey to taste (optional, depending on how sweet your melon is)
Week 4 Losing weight with smoothies - Melon and mint @ OrganisingChaosBlogYou can of course add Chia Seeds to the smoothie to boost the Omega 3 intake (more info on Chia Seeds see here) or any other kind of seeds for added natural oils! I would have but I think I have packed mine somewhere in preparation for the new kitchen coming next week (excited and terrified at once!) and I could not locate them.

Very fresh. Very tasty. Very healthy.

Week 3 of my Losing Weight with Smoothies!! Half way there! Yay!!Week 3 Losing weight with smoothies - banana, avocado & apple @ OrganisingChaosBlogI have to admit that I am looking forward to finishing this challenge. It’s not so much fun having the same thing for lunch every day but knowing that is working, that I am loosing weight in a healthy and natural way is keeping me going.

This week I have lost around 1 kg! Although it was my weekly set target at the beginning of the challenge, it was not as good as last week but considering that there was no smoothie in sight yesterday, it is pretty good, I think.

WEEK 3 : APPLE, BANANA & AVOCADO SMOOTHIE

100 ml of coconut milk or you can also use unsweetened almond milk
1/2 ripe avocado
1 ripe banana
1 green apple
1/2 large or 1 small stalk celery, chopped
1 tablespoon sunflower seeds
10 mint leaves
1 scoop of vanilla protein powder

I have to say that I was worried about the celery because I don’t like celery at all but you can’t taste it once blended with the rest of the ingredients! Just delish!

LOSING WEIGHT WITH SMOOTHIES – WEEK 2 : SPINACH & KIWI

This week’s smoothie for my personal challenge of Losing Weight with Smoothies is (drums roll for dramatic effect…)  a Spinach & Kiwi Smoothie!!!

I am already in my second week of my personal challenge for February and I am delighted to say that I have lost 1.5 kg last week (3,30 lbs), 50% more of what I was planning, so feeling pretty good about myself, I have to say. And all thanks to smoothies! who would have thought?

In all honesty, I was worried that I would get bored with effectively having the same lunch every day but I didn’t. The kale & pineapple smoothie kept me full until dinner and I didn’t even feel like snacking between meals. I think that also knowing that in every smoothie I was getting plenty of nutrients, vitamins and all sort of goodness helped me stay strong until dinner.

The dinners were had with my family. The same dinner as everyone so no extra work. On Tuesday I even shared a brownie with Mr B after dinner! And I still have managed to lose weight, so I am truly delighted and very much fired up for the second week!

It’s all about being prepared. I have been making the smoothie in the morning and I take it with me if I am going out so there is no chance of being tempted while out shopping, or if you feeling hungry earlier than usual – there smoothie is right there with me

This week smoothie is another nutritional delight full of vitamin C, iron, folic acid and calcium, and also delicious, because there is not point in drinking something super healthy if it tastes yucky, right?

100 ml of coconut milk
1/2 cucumber
1 banana
1 kiwi fruit
2 cups spinach
1/2 teaspoon chia seeds
1 to 2 scoops of vanilla protein powder

The cucumber and the kiwi make this smoothie so fresh!

I like adding chia seeds to any smoothies as they are high in omega 3 and healthy, and the protein powder bulks it up and helps me stay full until dinner.

LOSING WEIGHT WITH SMOOTHIES – WEEK 1: KALE & PINEAPPLE SMOOTHIE

I have been wanting to lose some weight for a while. I usually start the week full of good intentions but, as it happens,  the week rarely goes according to plan and on average the diet goes out the window by Thursday. Now, I have never nor I will ever be a person enslaved to diets or food plans. Life is too short for that. But I would like to shed some weight so…

I decided that the best way for me to stick to some sort of plan is to set myself a public challenge so there is so backing down. Name and shame, people, it’s the only way forward for me…

My goal is to lose 4 kg in a month (or 8.81 pounds). I believe that 1 kg a week is an achievable target and it can be managed with healthy diet and without starvation, which is very important in family life and to guarantee the survival of the rest of the family, if you know what I mean… As smoothies are easy to make, quick, versatile and delicious,(see previous recipes here, here and here) I decided I would go with green smoothies for this challenge.

So the plan is: substitute my daily lunch for super healthy, protein filled and delicious smoothie that will fill me with plenty of nutrients and enough energy to keep me going until dinner where I will be able to enjoy it with my family. Kale and pineapple smoothie @ OrganisingChaosBlog

I am thinking that Monday to Friday will be easy enough to follow the plan and drink the smoothies at lunchtime. However, I’d imagine the weekend will be harder. I will be enlisting Mr B and friends to support me and to help me stay strong through the challenge.

If you want to join me, I will be posting one smoothie recipe a week and I will keep you updated during the week by twitter and Facebook with a more in-depth report (I know you like those ones) every Monday this month. I will not, however, be posting my before and after weight. Nope. Too embarrassed.

GREEN FEBRUARY 
WEEK 1: KALE & PINEAPPLE SMOOTHIE

2 cups of chopped kale leaves, stems removed
1 cup of unsweetened almond milk (or any other milk you prefer)
1 banana (frozen if you want)
1/2 cup low-fat Greek yogurt
2 slices of pineapple
1 teaspoon peanut butter
1/2 teaspoon chia seeds
1 to 2 scoops of vanilla protein powder (not in the photo)

It is delicious. 2 pieces of fruit, 1 serving of vegetables, omega 3, calcium and good source of vitamin B6, fiber, calcium,potassium and vitamin E. And, I know you are wondering, the taste of kale is not at all dominant in it, but it works so well with the rest of the ingredients.

Monday to Friday, we are usually in too much of a rush to sit down and have breakfast so a smoothie is a great option for me. I can take it around the house while we all get ready . It is a breakfast on the go and it doesn’t even require chewing! (yes, i am that lazy!!)

This smoothie is not only delicious but it will also keep you full and energized for the entire morning. 2 tablespoons of peanut butter into your smoothie will provide you with 7 grams of protein and infinite grams of yumminess.

It is now 2 weeks since we came back from Spain and we went straight into the school routine, timetables… all that. Routine is good, especially when you have kids. I like structure, knowing what we are doing and when,and because our schedule is so tight during winter, I love throwing it all out the window in the summer and going with the flow, and I then am happy to go back to our routine.

Part of our winter routine is our Friday ritual. The kids have cinema night, which involves home-made pizza, smoothie, pop-corn and hot chocolate with marshmallows, and the adults have cocktails in the kitchen.

Tonight’s cocktails is one of my favorites:  a Screwdriver. This is my cocktail of choice in Spain so it has a lot of sunny and lovely memories attached to it.

SCREWDRIVER
1.25 ml of Vodka
Juice of 1 orange
Fizzy orange
Orange peel to garnish
Ice

Put 6 ice cubes in the glass and rub the edge of the glass with the orange peel.

Add the vodka, the juice of one orange and fill it up with fizzy orange. Stir carefully, decorate and enjoy!

The purists will have the Screwdriver with just vodka and orange juice but I like mixing fresh orange juice with some fizzy orange – that is how they serve it in Spain and that is how I like it. If you want to go the purist route, just fill the glass up with orange juice. I won’t judge you, I promise. 😉

MAKE YOUR OWN FLAVOURED WATER

It looks like the good weather has finally arrived to Ireland! I am nervous about getting excited about the heat as we don’t know if it is here to stay but we are totally embracing the summer with open arms.

With the heat comes more thirst. Although I am happy to use carbonated drinks as mixers in my cocktails, I have never been able to drinks them on their own, I just never enjoyed the fizz sensation in my mouth.  I have always been a water person. It is actually the only thing that will get rid of thirst for me. But water can get a bit boring and to drink the infamous 2.5 lts of water a day can be a challenge, so I decided to  gather all the empty bottles at home to infuse some water with different flavors for different moods or times of the day in order to encourage me to drink more water.

RASPBERRY WATER

Frozen berries are ideal for this. This is one the quickest infusions to do as the second you add the water to the raspberries you will see the color changing and the sweetness infusing the water (you won’t see that though). The kids have even requested it for their school lunches!

LEMON WATER

Lemon water is so fresh and probably the best way of crunching your thirst in those hot days or after exercise. It is also great for detoxing and generally good for the system. It is energizing and great to drink during the morning.

MINT AND BLUEBERRY WATER

If you don’t have a mint plant, I will strongly advise you to get one. There is minimum maintenance and it is a plant that keeps on giving. We use mint  a lot for tea, cocktails, food… and it will bring your plain water to a different dimension. I combined it with some frozen blueberries to get the mixture of sweetness and freshness, ideal to have between meals.

ORANGE AND CLOVE WATER

Orange and cloves are a great combination with hot or cold water. The orange peel gives the water a subtle citrus flavor without been too strong while the cloves gives it a hint of spice that will make your feel comfy and warm in those summer evenings.

So go on, there is no reason not to drink water any more. Give it a go!

COCKTAIL TIME : THE GIN FIZZ

There is nothing like that Friday feeling partnered with good weather to encourage you to make plans for the weekend. Whether is just hanging out at home with your family and painting the shed, meeting up with friends and grab a bite to eat or having a barbecue with your neighbours, good weather and weekends should be celebrated, especially around these part of the world where the good weather may not come back at all!

This cocktail really encapsulates spring for me: fresh, crisp and a little bit bitter. Maybe I am reading too much into this – sorry about that – I will get on with it.

GIN FIZZ – serves 1
1 1/2 measures of gin
1 tsp sugar
few long shreds of lemon peel
crushed ice
soda water

Mix the gin, the sugar and the lemon peel together until the sugar has dissolved. Pour into a long glass full of crushed ice and top up with chilled soda water.

The sugar and the lemon peel really make this cocktail something special.
